Rams’ next opponent: Dallas Cowboys scouting report

The Dallas Cowboys still aren’t a particularly dynamic team on offense, but they’re efficient. In Monday’s victory over Arizona, the Cowboys totaled just 273 yards of offense, but they needed just 45 plays to score four touchdowns and beat the Cardinals, 28-17, on the road. Strong defense and special teams meant the Cowboys had only one touchdown drive longer than five plays and 50 yards, and that one was pretty good. The Cowboys went 75 yards in only four...

Rams DE Ethan Westbrooks arrested on felony gun charges

Rams defensive end Ethan Westbrooks is facing five felony gun charges after getting arrested over the weekend in Bakersfield. Westbrooks was pulled over Friday night for speeding by the California Highway Patrol, at which point the officer found a loaded gun in Westbrook’s car.  A subsequent check revealed the gun was reported stolen in 2009. Both are felony offenses. Upon being arrested and booked, Westbrooks was charged with five counts: Carrying a loaded...

Preview for Dallas Cowboys at Arizona Cardinals

COWBOYS AT CARDINALS Kickoff: 5:30 p.m., ESPN Outlook: Dallas loafed its way through last week’s loss against Denver, like Ezekiel Elliott chasing down an interception. That won’t be the case this week against an Arizona offense that just isn’t the same without David Johnson. Carson Palmer really looks like he’s lost it, and while he can still get past lowly Indianapolis, he’s not going to have that success against a playoff team like Dallas.

NFL Week 3 preview: It has all fallen apart for Chuck Pagano, Colts

Less than three years ago, the Indianapolis Colts were just one game away from the Super Bowl, with one of the NFL’s best young quarterbacks under center and a beloved coach on the sideline. Chuck Pagano took over a 2-14 team, beat leukemia and won 11 games in both of his first two seasons, and here they stood, just below the NFL’s mountaintop. Few coaches are ever so fortunate. Pagano had the city behind him, Andrew Luck at quarterback and the NFL’s easiest...

High-scoring Rams must clean up defensive issues

After three games, and with a weekend off for correction, the Rams need to sustain their high-powered offense and clean up their defensive and special-teams mistakes. So, things have changed just a bit. In 2016, the Rams had the NFL’s lowest-scoring offense but were above-average on defense and excellent on special teams. Now, after a Thursday win over San Francisco, the Rams take a rare weekend break, and they likely will end it as the NFL’s highest-scoring offense, at...

Todd Gurley, Rams offense make up for sloppy ‘D’ in win over 49ers

SANTA CLARA — The Rams couldn’t lose this one. Not against a division rival. Not after last week. Not with the schedule about to get tougher. Not in a stadium that features the name “McVay” in tribute. So the Rams survived a near-disaster, a collapse that would have overshadowed the amazing improvement they’ve made on offense. Errors on defense and special teams put the Rams in a precarious spot, but they held on for a 41-39 victory over San...

Bonsignore: Jared Goff comes full circle but his ride with Rams is just beginning

For which he rewarded them by plunging a knife into the heart of the San Francisco 49ers, the team he grew up rooting for growing up in the Bay Area, before anxiously watching the Rams defense deliver a gallant last-minute stand to preserve a wildly entertaining 41-39 win over their bitter division foes. In the process, he sent a decisive message to a national television audience that he clearly isn’t the bust so many deemed him and the Rams are no longer the pushovers...

Rams receiver Sammy Watkins, quiet early, emerges with highlight catch

SANTA CLARA >> More than a month after they acquired him in a trade, the Rams found Sammy Watkins. The first two weeks of this season were tough for Watkins, who couldn’t seem to get into a rhythm, but Watkins showed his potential as a No. 1 receiver during Thursday night’s game at San Francisco, when he caught 6 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Watkins drew double coverage early in Thursday’s game but emerged in the second quarter during an...

Bonsignore: Rams to get big early-season litmus test Thursday vs. 49ers

SANTA CLARA >> It’s much too early in the season to start talking about must-wins for the Rams. Conventional wisdom suggests no matter what happens when they play the San Francisco 49ers tonight, it won’t make or break their season in the grand scheme of things. But viewed through the smaller lens of a young team and a young head coach trying to plant one sturdy footstep after another on their way to convocation, the 49ers offer a fascinating litmus test. Two...

Rams coach Sean McVay faces opponent that knows his stuff — once again

SANTA CLARA >> NFL play-callers never struggle to generate paranoia. They practice in private, fill their playbooks with coded terminology and cover their mouths on the sidelines when they speak. Imagine then, the self-imposed stress coaches must deal with when the opponent’s staff includes a former colleague, or even a family member. The second-guessing could become overwhelming. Is it wise to shake things up, to counter the familiarity, or just retain confidence that...
